Novak Djokovic Ponders Martin’s Mistake

Fighting through three relatively poor losses in recent weeks, Djokovic drew his final straw before the start of the clay-court season, and released Todd Martin of his part-time coaching duties. The partnership, which lasted the better part of six months, appeared initially to provide a great deal of value to the current world No. 2.
I must confess that at first glace I thought that the Djokovic-Martin combination would be a long lasting and beneficial pairing. With Martin being one of the most thoughtful and technically sound players of the Open era, his wisdom and stoic nature should have provided nothing short of a positive influence on the Serb. However, as recent results have shown us—more precisely Djokovic's serving and forehand woes that had littered numerous stat sheets—Martin's mistake was a grave one to say the least.
To start off, I'm all for improving a players strokes. Let's take Tiger Woods as a prime example here, and how he re-tooled his swing a few years back irrespective of the great success that he had already achieved. But, when taking into account Martin's train of thought when attempting to fix Djokovic's seemingly sound technical foundation, I was left to ask myself the following question: Was Martin really worried about Djokovic's game, or did his misjudgement, which we never thought he had, get in the way of his clarity?
Before all you Martin faithfuls out there get overly excited and begin to feverishly plot the defense of your man, I caution you to stay put for a moment.
