Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal Rivalry Set to Eclipse Them All

In seemingly fitting fashion, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic initiated their historic rivalry in the quarterfinals of the 2006 French Open.
That would of course be the same round of the same tournament in which they are poised to meet on Wednesday. Nadal led in that encounter by a score of 6-4, 6-4 before Djokovic ultimately retired from the match with a bad back.
Despite the nine years of elapsed time, the stakes for their upcoming meeting at the 2015 French Open remain much the same.
Djokovic is seeking a chance at the final piece in his career Grand Slam puzzle, while Nadal is looking to throw another one on the pile (nine titles and counting).
Beyond individual results, Djokovic and Nadal also continue to push their rivalry to new, record-setting levels. After passing Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe for the most meetings in the Open Era (37), their much anticipated dust-up in France this week will represent a hefty meeting number 44.
The duo already surpassed Nadal's rivalry with Roger Federer for the most encounters in the final round of a tournament at 22 (Federer and Nadal stand at 20). And while Djokovic-Nadal remains one behind Federer-Nadal in terms of meetings in Grand Slam finals (7 versus 8) this quarterfinal will arguably possess the same tension as any of those 15.
