No. 15 seed Gilles Simon was the biggest name in action, taking care of Viktor Troicki in a straight-sets romp. Frenchman Jeremy Chardy was also victorious, though his 7-6 (3), 7-5 win over Andrey Kuznetsov was more hotly contested.
Simon moved on rather easily, given his struggles with consistency. He double-faulted three times and managed to hit only 41 percent of his first serves in play. Winning six of seven points when facing a break wound up being the difference, and Simon was successful on 75 percent of his first serves that actually went in.
He moves on to play either Grigor Dimitrov or Filip Krajinovic, who are scheduled for their first-round matchup Monday.
Chardy won on the back of his first-serve power despite some struggles of his own. He drilled eight aces past Kuznetsov, but those also came with six double faults. The match was filled with back-and-forth breaks. Chardy managed to save only three of his seven break points, while Kuznetsov was good on only five of 10. Neither player won more than 60 percent of his serve points, with Kuznetsov barely taking more than half.
Chardy will take on Albert Ramos-Vinolas or Roberto Bautista Agut in his second-round matchup.
In qualifier matchups, perhaps the biggest upset of the day was No. 11 qualifier Daniel Gimeno-Traver taking down top qualifier Marcel Granollers. Gimeno-Traver was dominant in his 6-3, 6-0 triumph. He didn't face a single break point on his serves, winning 77 percent of the points overall. Granollers won just 46 percent of his serve points against his fellow Spaniard.
