Rafael Nadal, Stanislas Wawrinka, David Ferrer and Roger Federer are just a few of the names in the hunt for a title at the major event, with Nadal looking to keep hold of his No. 1 ranking and successfully act as the defending champion after upending Wawrinka in the final a year ago.
For Nadal, it will be a tough challenge. The best in the world has been rather uncharacteristic as of late, losing back-to-back quarterfinals at tournaments he historically dominates. He says the best thing he can do is fight through the tough times, per the Associated Press, via ABC News:
I have been working since I lost in Barcelona. You have to continue and continue and continue, and think that things are going to work out for you. When you come from tough moments like this, you come back with a little more intensity to try to be back as soon as possible. That's what I'm trying to do right now.
The work continues in Madrid, where Nadal will once again have to fend off Wawrinka, who is red hot after winning his first Masters 1000 title at Monte Carlo.
One name Nadal won't have to worry about? Rival Novak Djokovic, whose arm injury is still not 100 percent. Per the AP, via ESPN, Djokovic put in the effort to make an appearance but to no avail.
"I did everything possible in order to play in Madrid," he said, "but unfortunately my right arm injury has flared up again."
Losing a name like Djokovic hurts the tournament, but not as much as it would have in past years thanks to an incredibly stacked field. With Nadal a bit down on his luck and exciting names and depth lining the draw, this is clearly a must-see event for casual and hardcore fans alike.
