Madrid Masters 1000: Draw Preview and Analysis

I'll refrain from mentioning that Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray won the Madrid Masters when it was played on indoor hard-courts in the fall, while defending champion Roger Federer attempts to capture his fifth career clay Masters title in Spain this week.
The clay season has once again brought us what he pretty expect every year: Nadal is large and in charge, and we're left to come up with a suitable second-place finisher.
The Spaniard will enter Madrid hot on the heels of two comprehensive, yet challenging weeks in Monte Carlo and Rome.
Monte Carlo was challenging in the sense that Nadal hadn't won a title in nearly a year, and desperately needed to rack up a "W" on the circuit, while Rome, though not a complete cakewalk like Monaco, proved that Nadal was still human, and had enough mettle to prevail.
Moving onto the the rest of "suitable second-place finishers," top seed Federer will attempt to repeat his first-ever Masters event on clay, while tempering any of the rough edges which reside in his clay-court game.
The top-ranked Swiss didn't look particularly comfortable in Estoril, and will need to fine-tune his eclectic timing if he's to duplicate his French Open heroics of a year ago.
Apart from Federer and Nadal, the usual cast of characters will be around and kicking in the Magic Box this year.
Andy Murray will be vying for his first respectable showing in months; Fernando Verdasco, and David Ferrer will continue to share some practice and pasta time together; and finally, we'll all find out if Ernests Gulbis can build on his '10 awakening and pour in another world beater performance in Madrid's altitude?
