Nadal leads the pair’s career head-to-head meetings 13-7, while winning nine of 11 clay-court encounters.
What have you been up to over the past 12 months? Have you bought a house, played some poker, or taken that much needed trip the Mexico that you’ve always wanted?
Well, the world of professional tennis has been without its most cherished jewel for exactly a year, and that wait will finally end on Sunday.
While Roger Federer picked up the pieces with Rafael Nadal’s absence at the French Open last year, it took the Spaniard nearly a year (11 months to be exact) to rebound and capture a Tour crown.
While Federer was winning Wimbledon; making the finals of the US Open, and taking home his fourth Australian Open crown, Nadal was back in Mallorca nursing his battered knees.
Federer has had an overall better 12 months than Nadal, but the Spaniard is by far the hottest player on the circuit at the moment. Losing two sets en route to reaching his third straight clay final, Nadal is fresh, and ready to bring back his winning ways of 2008.
Sunday’s final in Madrid will mark the legendary pair’s 21st encounter. Nadal has defeated Federer 82 percent of the time when the duo has locked horns on the dirt, while Federer’s lone victories over the Spaniard came with an asterisks or two involved.
Simply put, and this will be the only question I’ll need answering to come Sunday’s final: Can Federer defeat an injury-free Nadal on clay-courts?
Federer has proven victorious against a sub par Nadal in the past, but not when the raging Mallocan has been in full fight.
I fully expect Nadal to be jumping out of his shoes on Sunday, while employing his historic, strategically solid game plan against the Swiss.
