When we live through other human beings in the real world we are willingly reducing ourselves to a low-budget Hollywood caricature of human frailty. But before you plug into your Nadal or Federer avatars give these words a test run, though don’t cut me any slack.
My background is not too important—as negligible as most human history. First, let’s get something out of the way so that our egos don’t all burst from innuendo. I’m not a mediocre tennis player. In fact, I’m probably worse than the lowest common denominator.
I don’t think much of my tennis skills, and neither should you. Look that’s not false modesty—it’s not even an attempt to solicit pity from you, dear reader.
That’s the thing about the truth: telling it always ends up costing you the most.
Don’t get me wrong, I still feel that one doesn’t have to be a pro to have an appreciation for the game or even a decent understanding of it.
But damn it, even little insignificant me in my cloistered Shire of this Middle Chicago suburb knows that something is amiss in the tennis world.
No it’s not Nadal’s sweaty Popeye-forearms, fist-screwing the air as he celebrates in another victory dance after another victory in another Masters event that looks suspiciously like the one prior to it.
The man deserves his victories as any better player on any given day ever deserved his—and there’s a likable sports cliché for you.
