Kei Nishikori Injury: Updates on Tennis Star’s Hip and Return

Nishikori to Miss the Western and Southern Open Sunday, August 16 The W&S Open announced on Twitter that Nishikori withdrew from the tournament Sunday, a day after he was knocked out of the Rogers Cup by Andy Murray in the semifinals and two days after he defeated Rafael Nadal in the quarters.
There were hints of a burgeoning injury in his match against Murray, as Chris Fowler of ESPN noticed Saturday:
Nishikori has put together a strong season, going 34-8 with two singles titles and rising to No. 4 in the rankings coming into the Rogers Cup. While he hasn't advanced past the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam this year, he certainly would have been expected to be a factor at the U.S. Open in two weeks.
Now, however, the concern will be that Nishikori's injury could potentially keep him out of that tournament. Skipping the Western and Southern Open may simply be a precautionary measure so that Nishikori is ready to go for the U.S. Open. That would be the best-case scenario for one of the few players capable of wrestling a Grand Slam title away from the Big Four of Murray, Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.
