There have been plenty of upsets in the early going, and Day 4 added to the total.
No. 4 Tomas Berdych and No. 9 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga were both eliminated on the men’s side of the draw, while No. 9 Sarah Errani, No. 13 Roberta Vinci and No. 14 Carla Suarez Navvaro all lost on the women’s side of things.

With the NCAA tournament right around the corner, it is only appropriate that there has been so much attrition with some of the higher seeds in Indian Wells thus far. It’s March, after all.

No. 2 Novak Djokovic defeats Victor Hanescu, 7-6, 6-2
In a day dominated by upsets, No. 2 Novak Djokovic made sure he wasn’t the biggest name to fall.
While the match was over in an efficient two sets, Djokovic had to work for the first set, eventually winning it 7-6. Victor Hanescu deserves some credit for putting up an impressive fight early on against one of the best (if not the best) tennis players in the world.
Yet Djokovic took the momentum from the hard-fought first set and cruised to victory in the second, 6-2.
Looking forward, it is difficult to see anyone knocking off Djokovic if he plays this well for the rest of the tournament.
