Rajeev Ram def. John-Patrick Smith Rajeev Ram is through to the singles final after defeating John-Patrick Smith in straight sets 6-4, 7-6. The Tennis Hall of Fame caught a glimpse of his match-winner:
A player who has made his name in doubles play, Ram is making just his second final of a singles tournament. It just so happens that the other tournament was also the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in 2009, which he won.
He was able to overcome Smith's three aces, winning a little over 30 percent of first-return points, compared to Smith's 14 percent.
When Ram was serving in the first set, he was an easy favorite, overpowering Smith by winning 85 percent of his points when getting the first serve in. He was just as dominant in the second set, winning 82 percent of his first-service points.
Ivo Karlovic def. Jack Sock Ivo Karlovic is through to the final to face Ram on Sunday after defeating Jack Sock in straight sets 7-6, 6-4.
Like his quarterfinal match on Friday, Karlovic used his fearsome serve to get by his opponent. Of the 73 points he won in his semifinal match against Sock, Karlovic recorded 14 aces.
He had to use them to battle back from a 1-4 deficit in the first set, as the Tennis Hall of Fame shows his set-winner, naturally coming off an ace:
Karlovic saved two of a possible three break points in the comeback, but the second set was not nearly as dramatic as Karlovic cruised to a 6-4 victory.
