Gerry Weber Open: Tomas Berdych and Viktor Troicki Advance to Quarterfinals

Berdych served well, hitting 11 aces and won 74 percent of his first-serve points and 52 percent of points on his second serve.
His opponent, ranked 218th, didn’t fare as well on serve. He hit six aces and winning 61 percent of his first-serve points and 54 percent of his second-serve points.
Both players traded breaks of serve in the first set before Berdych broke through for a second. There were no breaks of serve in the second set as both men improved their serving. The set went to a tiebreaker, which Berdych narrowly won.
The Czech’s next opponent will be fifth-seeded Serbian Viktor Troicki. The Serb cruised into the quarterfinals after he defeated Igor Andreev 6-3, 6-1 on Wednesday.
Troicki hit five aces to four double faults, and won 67 percent of points on his serve. The Serb broke Andreev five times, and he won 57 percent of his returning points.
Berdych and Troicki have a 1-1 record against each other, with the Czech winning their last match in straight sets at the 2010 BNP Paribas Open.
“It will be a really tough game,” Berdych said to the Associated Press. “Only the ranking position could make me the favorite. He is really playing well the last couple of weeks.”
Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt, the tournament’s defending champion, won his first match since February after he defeated Leonardo Mayer, of Argentina, 6-3, 6-1. The 30-year-old Hewitt, now ranked 73rd, has been out of the game because of foot and ankle injuries.
Hewitt was originally slated to play Roger Federer in the first round, but the Swiss withdrew from the tournament on Monday. Mayer replaced Federer as a lucky loser.
