The field is stacked with the game's best from the men's side. Roger Federer will look to show his dominance on grass after an early exit from Roland Garros. Unlike Rafael Nadal, who is also competing, Federer has the benefit of extra rest on his side due to the upset loss early on.
In fact, the rest will probably help Federer play up to the level that he always has on grass. Ian Horne of LiveTennis.com pointed to the stat sheet to explain just how good Federer is on grass surfaces:
Since 1973, Federer is the ATP's Win-Loss Index leader for career grass court matches. The 17-time slam winner's record on the surface currently stands at 122-18, and he's been able to pick up 13 titles in the process. Seven of these have been won at Wimbledon, where he's been able to stamp his mark on the game and earn a reputation as the King of the Lawns (which doesn't quite have the same ring to it as Rafael Nadal's King of Clay moniker).
Federer's Win-Loss Index stands at 0.871 (matches won per matches played) on grass, and he's followed on that list by John McEnroe (119-20 record) and Bjorn Borg (61-11 record).
Nadal, who missed the tournament last year, doesn't want to miss it again. He triumphed at the French Open for the ninth time in the past decade, and the Spaniard wants nothing more than to carry that momentum forward and succeed at Halle.
After winning the French Open on Sunday, he told Horne that he'd be making the trip to Germany:
I am going to Halle tomorrow. I want to try to play well again in Wimbledon. I'm healthy. That's the most important thing, I feel…For me, is a tournament I really love so much, so after the match of today and after how tired I am, after a litt...
