But his chance at redemption is fast approaching.
Wimbledon is set to begin near the end of the month. Federer last lost the Halle final in 2010 to Lleyton Hewitt, and he followed that with a bitter quarterfinals loss to Tomáš Berdych at Wimbledon.
This year's Wimbledon could serve as a platform for redemption, not only from his latest disappointment, but also from the drubbing he suffered against Novak Djokovic in the 2012 French Open semifinals earlier this month.
Federer's history at Wimbledon has been an illustrious one. After winning six times, his last coming in 2009, Federer has struggled.
In his quest for redemption, another obstacle emerges. As each year passes, the likeliness Federer he'll win another Grand Slam wanes.
The last couple of years have been rough for Federer. His most recent Grand Slam victory came in the 2010 Australian Open.
Nadal and Djokovic's dominance the last two years has almost marginalized Federer's status as a Grand Slam shoo-in. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that all it would take would be a semifinals appearance, or even a win against Djokovic or Nadal, to regain some footing, but that may not be enough for Federer himself.
For the doubters, it could prove that he still has the ability to advance and contend to add to his Grand Slam count.
The Swiss Maestro has little, if anything, left to prove in his career. But as is the case with any top athlete, pride serves as a huge motivator to continue winning until the end.
