French Open: Still in the Dark Ages

Dark places are scary because what we cannot see, we cannot know and we cannot deal with. Therefore, vision is requisite for knowledge and thus the ability to deal with our environment requires light.
Humphry Davy, creator of the electric arc in the early 1800‘s, produced the first rudimentary light emission device that did not burn something. Many years later, in the latter half of the 18th century, 1878 to be precise, Joseph Wilson Swan created a carbon filament which was used to produce light.
Charles Francis Bush used a carbon arc lighting instrument to illuminate a public square in 1877. Thomas Edison then combined all these ideas into the oxygen-free bulb concept in 1879, which started to be mass produced after William Coolidge replaced the carbon filament with tungsten in 1910.
Soon after, the world had incandescent bulbs and behold, there was man-made light and the dark places were not so dark anymore. Apparently this is breaking news to the French.
Because I did not know about any of this fascinating stuff until about one hour ago when the most exciting match in a while was taking place before our eyes and then had to be stupidly postponed because we, the viewers, and they, the two players, could not see the court.
Because apparently France has not made it to 1809, the year that Humphry Davy created the first arc light.
