Second seed Andy Murray was pushed to the limit again on Wednesday, as he needed five sets to overcome a determined Mathias Bourgue in Round 2 at the French Open.
The Scot was down in sets by 2-1 at one point in the contest, as his opponent capitalised on frailties that were on show in Murray’s last match with Radek Stepanek. But the two-time major champion recomposed himself to take a 6-2, 2-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 triumph.
Elsewhere, there were wins for 2015 champion Stanislas Wawrinka and eighth seed Milos Raonic. In the women's draw, second seed Agnieszka Radwanska coasted through her match, while Garbine Muguruza showed her quality on the clay courts, swaggering into the third round.

Murray Battles Through Again Murray is renowned for his fortitude and will to win. But in the Scotsman’s storied career, rarely have we seen him have to call on these qualities quite so early in a Grand Slam tournament.

After taking the first set, 6-2, it seemed as though normal service was resumed for Murray following his close call against Stepanek. However, Bourgue found his feet in front of his home crowd, putting his illustrious opponent under big pressure, forcing mistakes and taking the next two sets with ease.
The Frenchman had never been in a four-set match before, though, which showed as Murray came on strong. Having taken the fourth stanza, the result then never looked to be in doubt, although the world No. 2 seed’s rivals will be watching on with intrigue at his struggles so far.
