Tuesday at the French Open was quite the eventful day despite the tournament still being in first-round action. A number of superstars got their tournament underway, and a few huge upsets rocked the bracket.

Coming into the day, the biggest story was Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams all opening up play. None disappointed though Jarkko Nieminen tested Djokovic before Djokovic eventually won 6-2, 7-5, 6-2.

After, Djokovic paid respect to his opponent, per Roland Garros on Twitter:

Of course, nobody expected Djokovic to bow out this early given his track record in the first round at this tournament, as ESPN Stats & Information noted:

Rafael Nadal, meanwhile, hasn't come into this tournament in top form, but he was certainly dialed in both during his 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 dismissal of Quentin Halys and afterwards in his press conference, per Jim Caple of ESPN:

Greg Garber of ESPN.com has more on that epic answer:

At the end of his news conference, Nadal was asked if there was any room for improvement heading toward the second week. His long-winded answer was 918 words long. It began with an aggressive forehand and consistency and wound up with a passionate defense of the Spanish Tennis Federation.

Yes, Rafael Nadal is fully engaged here. Back to you, Mr. Djokovic.

Indeed, the rest of the field would probably prefer Nadal was approaching this tournament from a more relaxed, easygoing perspective. But don't expect Nadal to start sharing French Open titles without putting up a fight.

The American men at Roland Garros put up quite the fight, as No. 16 John Isner beat Andreas Seppi in straight sets, and Jack Sock provided one of the shockers on the day, knocking off No. 10 Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets.

After, former tennis star Andy Roddick had kind words for the pair:
