Besides being almost obliterated in swirls of red dust, Day 5 at the French Open presented many shocking moments as well as number of close calls.

The women’s No. 2 seed Kim Clijsters fell in Round 2 to a 20-year-old Dutch lady, Arantxa Rus, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.

After winning the first set and being up 5-2 in set two, Clijsters' game collapsed. The windy conditions undoubtedly had much to do with the Belgian’s demise.

Maria Sharapova was another player whose game seemed to spiral out of control.

The Russian’s duress materialized under a barrage of winners from a 17-year-old Frenchwoman, Caroline Garcia––aided by the gusty winds.

At one point, down 6-3, 4-1, Sharapova fought her way back from the brink of extinction to capture the second set.

After that, the Russian took the match. Garcia’s game disintegrated, despite having the boisterous French crowd behind her.

While Rafael Nadal won in straight sets, the match was no gimme for the No. 1 seed. Facing Nadal, fellow Spaniard, Pablo Andujar, gave the No. 1 seed no breathing room in the match.

After winning the first two tense sets, Nadal found himself down 5-1 in the third. The Majorcan fought his way back, leveling the set. Nadal won the subsequent tiebreak 7-4.

There were no easy wins for the top seeds in Day 5.

In Day 6, Roger Federer, the No. 3 seed, faces Serb Janko Tipsarevic while No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic must send Argentine Juan Marin del Potro home in order to advance.

Caroline Wozniacki, No. 1 on the women’s side, must do battle with Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia to move on to the fourth round. Both last year’s finalists are in action early with Samantha Stosur facing Argentine Gisela Dulko and Francesca Schiavone trying to advance over Shuai Peng of China.

Yesterday, the weather was a factor. Today promises to bring...
