Without a doubt, Justine Henin has established herself as the premier clay court player on the WTA tour.  She has a heartfelt story complete with all of the makings of a Hallmark Movie of the Week. The untimely passing of her mother when she was still a child, her estrangement from her family, set against the backdrop of her meteoric rise to the top of women’s tennis.

After reaching the pinnacle of her tennis career in late 2007, a year which saw her firmly hold the world number one ranking and capture two Grand Slam titles, Justine began to feel like she had accomplished what she set out to do in the game of tennis. By mid 2008 Henin retired, still ranked number one in the world at the time.

Retirement is a tricky word for great athletes of all sports. Every champion dreams of going out on top. From Michael Jordan to Floyd Mayweather Jr. to Kim Clijsters, many great athletes have retired and then regretted it. The urge to compete, and the desire for one last glorious run is too much to ignore.

Justine Henin is no different. By early 2010, Justine was not only back on the WTA tour but in the Finals of a Grand Slam after only a few tournaments back in action. Only an in-form Serena Williams could defeat her.

Henin is a seven time grand slam champion and 42-time WTA tour winner and has already sealed her invite to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Though some have questioned her gamesmanship and character (stemming from incidents with Serena Williams in 2003, and Amelie Mauresmo in 2006), the tiny Belgian dynamo’s determination to win and passion for the game can never be questioned and her fans love her for it.

When compared with her countrywoman Kim Clijsters, the differences are stark. Henin stands about 5’6” tall, and weights about 120 pounds, yet casts a gigantic shadow on the tennis court. Clijsters is a much bigger, muscular player—primarily a ...
