Federer and Nadal Reach Semis in Qatar; Monfils Beats Blake in Brisbane

Top seed Roger Federer and No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal took two distinct paths to reach the semifinals in Doha on Thursday.
Federer, who is seeking his first tournament title since Cincinnati last summer, dismissed the formidable but inconsistent efforts of Latvian Ernests Gulbis, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Using his reliable serve to stave off three break points, Federer demonstrated his renowned calm during the second set.
However, down 4-5, Federer committed a volley error to level the match at a set apiece.
Remaining on keel in set three, Federer's second break of the set at 4-4 would seal his semifinal spot.
Although Gulbis displayed atypical fight and determination throughout the one hour and 47 minute defeat, his power driven game will require improved net play and fitness if he is to move up the ranks.
Losing one set throughout the event thus far, Federer will now await the winner of the day's final match between No. 3 seed Nikolay Davydenko and No. 7 seed Ivo Karlovic.
Davydenko recently captured his first career victory over Federer during the Tour finale in London.
No. 2 seed Nadal barely broke a sweat in reaching his first career semifinals in Doha.
Facing Steve Darcis of Belgium, Nadal utilized his crosscourt forehand to offset the one-handed backhand rhythm of his opponent.
After capturing the first set 6-1, Darcis was forced to retire with a back injury in the second set while trailing 2-0.
Nadal, who recently captured the title in Abu Dhabi, commented on his level of play and the health of his opponent.
“I am playing well,” Nadal said. “There was more confirmation that I am hitting the ball well. I started well and served good. I am in the semifinals without losing a set. I am happy with that.”
