Federer and Nadal Cruise Into Qatar Quarters; Roddick Wins in Brisbane

Top seed Roger Federer and No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal stormed into the Qatar Open quarterfinals on Wednesday dismissing Evgeny Korolev and Potito Starace, respectively.
Federer, who dismantled Christophe Rochus in straight sets on Tuesday, continued to dominate with the victory over Korolev defeating the Kazakhstan native 6-2, 6-4.
Absorbing the blistering pace from Korolev's forehand earlier on, Federer captured three breaks of serve in the first set, while winning 80 percent of his first serve points.
Carrying his momentum into the second set, Federer's forehand on-the-run produced a handfull of lazer-like winners.
Needing just over an hour to capture his second victory of the new year, Federer will now face either Andreas Seppi or Ernests Gulbis in the round of eight.
Gulbis and Seppi will take the court later on Wednesday.
Federer, who improved to 3-0 against Korolev in the pair's career meetings, spoke about his hard-hitting opponent in the post-match presser.
"I know how he plays so I had the match under control," Federer said. "He plays a lot of balls on the forehand, so I was able to stay ahead in the match.
"There were long rallies in the second set, but I am pleased to have reached the quarter-finals."
Second seed Nadal, a loser to Gael Monfils in the quarterfinals last year, steamrolled Starace 6-2, 6-2 in one hour and 12 minutes.
Nadal's inside-out-forehand and lefty serve remained the go-to play for the duration of the contest.
Running Starace to the outer corners of the stadium court, Nadal struck a final forehand winner for match-point.
The Mallorcan, who improved to 6-2 at the event, will now face Steve Darcis in the quarterfinals. Darcis breezed past Younes El Aynaoui 6-3, 6-1 earlier in the day.
