Favourites for the 2014 Men’s Australian Open

So who are the favorites for the first Grand Slam of 2014?
Here are my picks.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
The 2008 finalist can beat just about anyone on any surface, on any given day—other than a Sunday.
That’s unfortunate, as that’s when the finals of Grand Slam singles events are usually held!
Possessing incredible athleticism and power, particularly on the serve and forehand, the 28-year-old Frenchman is more than capable of blasting his way into the final stages of a Grand Slam.
It remains to be seen, though, whether his recently appointed coaching team of Nicolas Escude and Thierry Ascione can help turn his undoubted talent into a trophy at Melbourne.
It would surprise, but not disappoint me, if the No. 10-seeded Tsonga were to make it past the semifinals.
Juan Martin Del Potro
It would however, be no great surprise to see the world No. 5 win a Grand Slam in 2014.
What is surprising is that the 25-year-old has failed to add to his Slam total following his victory 2009 U.S. Open victory.
Del Potro has everything required to be a serial majors winner.
Incredibly hard-hit groundstrokes and serve, combined with a winners’ desire, make the 6'6" Argentinian one of the most dangerous players on tour.
I expect Del Potro to make it to at least the semifinals, and depending on who he plays there, to perhaps go all the way.

The 2013 Wimbledon champion arrives in Melbourne having played just two tournaments since back surgery in September.
At the Abu Dhabi Mubadala World Championship exhibition event at the end of December, the world No. 4 lost in straight sets to Tsonga before beating world No. 8 Stanislas Wawrinka, also in straight sets....
