Japan may have boasted home advantage as they welcomed the Czech Republic to Tokyo on Friday, but the visitors proved more than a match on this occasion.
Lukas Rosol and Radek Stepanek stood firm in their singles rubbers, defeating Taro Daniel and Tatsuma Ito, respectively, to ensure the defending champions maintained pace in their title defence.
Stepanek took his time in settling among his Japanese surroundings, but after slipping to a one-set deficit, the world-ranked No. 47 struck back to emerge as the victor, winning 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 6-1, 7-5.
The third set was the moment things really began to turn in Stepanek's favour, and the veteran was fully aware of how close the fixture was, tweeting his feelings after the match:
Rosol's Davis Cup fate looked to be even more uncertain in the middle stages of his encounter with Ito, too, as the 28-year-old suffered back-to-back losses in the third and fourth sets, putting his fast start to some waste.
Ito was in unknown waters, though, as the official Davis Cup Twitter account shows, and it undoubtedly worked in his opponent's favour:
Mental fortitude was tested as Rosol rallied to give the Czech's a 2-0 lead overall, eventually winning a fifth, decisive set to triumph 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-2.
