Madison Keys beat Kristina Mladenovic in straight sets to book her place in Round 3, but Venus Williams suffered a shock exit at the hands of local favourite Shuai Peng.
Agnieszka Radwanska progressed to the next round, defeating Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
In the men's draw, fifth seed David Ferrer kicked off his tournament with a win as he overcame Pablo Cuevas in straight sets. Sixth seed Lucas Pouille and seventh seed Roberto Bautista Agut also won.

Recap Muguruza started her match in fine fettle as she broke Putintseva twice on the way to claiming the opening set 6-2, successfully saving two break points against her all the while.
