But those four men could all be tied for second place on the list of the consummate professional athlete—guys that were born to relentlessly pursue what rightfully belonged to them with a mix of God-given talent, ceaseless hard work, and a disciplined mental fortitude. But the guy who tops the list, and could easily take his place as the top professional athlete of all time—is Roger Federer.
The reason Federer is probably the top professional athlete of all time is not because he's necessarily the most talented at his sport, or even the most unbeatable. What sets Federer apart is his ability to do his job better than any pro athlete I have ever seen.
Jordan’s personality, as evidenced by his speech at his induction to the Hall of Fame, has always been polarizing. With Jim Brown, people will always wonder what could have been had he enjoyed a longer career. Babe Ruth’s work ethic was frequently questioned by his teammates, and with Tiger Woods, well, we’re still waiting to see how if his image is ever going to recover.
You haven’t had any of those problems with Federer.
What defines a professional is essentially a person that not only does his job well, but furthers that by doing more than is asked of him. People like that usually will quietly let their performance do the talking while remaining focused on ways they can get better. That's what Federer does.
Other guys have been just as good at this as Federer. Though I can't imagine there are many that have enjoyed as much success.
