Caroline Wozniacki: What Impact Will Her Seoul Win Have on the Rest of ’12?

But there's one thing Caroline Wozniacki should be thinking about after her win over the weekend in Seoul:
It's a start.
Wozniacki has garnered more than her fair share of attention for holding onto the No. 1 ranking while never winning a Grand Slam. Winning one aside, she's actually only finished runner-up at a major once, the 2009 U.S. Open.
That's been the least of her concerns for 2012, though, as Wozniacki has been suffering somewhat surprising losses throughout the year and even saw her ranking fall out of the top 10.
Her style of play has been criticized more than ever this year as being too defensive, adding to some of the outside pressure she's faced. And the emergence of Victoria Azarenka, along with the re-emergence of Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, has left Wozniacki on the outside looking in.
However, none of that mattered this past week as she fought through to capture the title in Seoul, where she was the top seed in a field that included three of her fellow members in the top 20. Defeating a powerful player in Kaia Kanepi in the finals is a good sign as to where Wozniacki's game stands right now. And winning from a tight position as she did in the semifinals also shows where her mental level is right now, too.
Any player that gets to No. 1 in the world obviously has an incredible amount of talent. This win in Seoul could help ease any doubts Wozniacki has about her place in the game and lift her back toward the top eight—or higher—by the end of the year.
