The sixth-seeded Dane looked focused from the opening point, winning the first set in just over a half an hour.
Wozniacki, who reached three straight U.S. Open semifinals from 2009 to 2011, was incredibly sharp during her return games in the opening set. The 23-year-old managed to put 14-of-22 receiving points and break Duan three times in the frame. Another key for Wozniacki in the first set was her play on her second serve. She won 5-of-7 second-serve points to make up for winning just 9-of-19 first-serve points.
Duan would have some bright moments of her own, though, including a powerful forehand winner that Wozniacki had no chance to get to, per the U.S. Open on Twitter:
That shot from the 24-year-old seemed to give her confidence heading into the second set as she jumped on top of Wozniacki quickly in the second frame, breaking the favorite twice and winning five of the first seven games to pull within one game of forcing a third set and final set.
But the top-ranked Dane quickly showed why she's the world No. 8, breaking her opponent three straight times and reeling off five consecutive games to close out the set and the match.
Duan was the more aggressive player overall, recording 34 winners to just 11 for Wozniacki. But for every winner, there was an unforced error for the unseeded challenger, who finished with 46 errors to just 11 for Wozniacki.
With the victory, Wozniacki will advance to play the winner of an all-South African matchup between Chanelle Scheepers vs. Chanel Simmonds. Neither player is seeded and will be an underdog against the 2009 U.S. Open finalis...
