At the ATP World Tour Finals the hotly anticipated showdown between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer never materialised because of the latter’s injury, while the former pulled out of a final with Andy Murray at the tournament in Mubadala recently.
Hopefully, the Brisbane International can give us a competition to remember and when you look at the field involved, there should be some fascinating matches to savour. Federer, whose year ended in such disappointing fashion, will be in attendance and hoping to go one better than his runners-up spot here last season, per Sky Sports:
I would love to win this event. I was close last year, after I had had a good week.
I always like lifting trophies in a place that I have never been able to. I am unbelievably pumped up for this week. It's a really good field, with a lot of promising players.
In addition to Federer, Kei Nishikori will want to start the year in style with a tournament triumph, while last year’s winner and crowd favourite Lleyton Hewitt will also be hoping for another victory in front of what should be a raucous Australian crowd.
Maria Sharapova will be the main attraction in the women’s tournament; the Russian will be the top seed in a draw that will contain four of the world’s top 10 female players.
All the top players in attendance will have an eye on the Australian Open in a couple of weeks' time and this tournament is renowned for being an excellent momentum builder ahead of that particular Grand Slam.
