While big names such as Rafael Nadal will not be in attendance, the indoor clay tournament has more than $470,000 on the line and acts as a critical juncture for players to earn points as an ATP World Tour 250 event.
The tournament's second year in Sao Paulo after 11 in Costa do Sauipe figures to be an exciting one for fans around the world, as big names like Nadal—the 2013 winner—have put on impressive displays before making runs at larger events.
This year's biggest name is Germany's Tommy Haas, who will make his first appearance in the tournament at the age of 35. He enters after reaching the Zagreb final earlier in the month and is in hot pursuit of ATP World Tour title No. 16.
That said, Haas recently had his momentum derailed at the Delray Beach Open in Las Vegas on Wednesday when he lost to unranked qualifier Steve Johnson. He blamed his inability to adjust as the reason for his stunning loss, via Dave George of the Palm Beach Post:
I just made too many easy unforced errors. I struggled a little bit with really focusing and seeing the ball at certain times with the lights and a lot of distractions for me.
Tough conditions, you know. You play a day match yesterday and it’s completely different here playing at night. … It’s not an excuse. It’s the same for both players and some adjust better than others, but there’s always something.
Haas must rebound in a hurry, because his biggest competition is No. 2 seed Nicolas Almagro, who owns a 20-5 record at the tournament and has taken home the top prize three times (2008, 2011, 2012).
