Tournaments have been held in the city since 1900, with the intense action of the BMW Open first making its way to the Iphitos Tennis Club in 1974. For the players that thrive on clay surfaces, this is one of the best in the world.
There are several stars joining the fray for this tournament, including defending champion Tommy Haas, two-time champion Philipp Kohlschreiber and 2010 winner Mikhail Youzhny.
Add clay-court specialist Fabio Fognini into the mix for the first time in his career, and the talent and depth of this year’s event is unparalleled.
Haas spoke to German newspaper Bild, via a rough translation from TennisWorld.Org about how he doesn’t have much longer in his storied career:
My career-ending is not far away. When it is just so far, I do not know. I’ll feel when it’s time to go. My friend Andy Roddick is one day stood up and felt that it, time to go. Is that he has only played the U.S. Open and then it was over. And he is with himself and his career at peace. So I would wish me well.
If Haas wants to add another win to his resume before he calls time on his career, he will have to overcome tough competition, including a possible rematch of last year’s final against Kohlschreiber.
With an incredible field and plenty of action scheduled in this tournament, tennis fans can’t wait for the competition to unfold.
