That included the top-seeded player in the draw as World No. 10 Janko Tipsarevic was ousted by unheralded German Daniel Brands, No. 69 in the world, to a tune of 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
With the talented Serb out of the picture, four players remain heading into Saturday's semifinal clashes, and after posting convincing victories in the previous rounds, all have reasonably strong chances at reaching the final.
Here's a look at who will advance to the final round of the 2013 BMW Open.
Quarterfinal No. 1: Daniel Brands vs. Philipp Kohlschreiber
In a match between two of Germany's best, Kohlschreiber has to be considered the favorite, but one can't discount Brands' accomplishment in beating Tipsarevic in a hard-fought three-set affair in the quarters.
However, Kohlschreiber, who has four ATP titles under his belt, is simply a more talented player and has been playing great tennis for the last year, reaching his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at Wimbledon last summer.
Kohlschreiber, No. 21 in the world, also managed to finish his quarterfinal match off in two sets, so he'll be rested and ready to go.
It's probably also worth mentioning that he's the reigning champion at this very tournament in Munich.
The pair have met once before during the round of 32 at Munich in 2010, and Kohlschreiber defeated his fellow countryman 6-4, 6-4.
Kohlschreiber was poised against Viktor Troicki in the quarters, saving 10 break points to preserve the victory, and given how well he's played over the last month, it's tough to pick against him.
