Bethanie Mattek-Sands Makes Second Round at Hobart

It wasn't the ideal way to reach the second round, but as the top-ranked American in the field, Bethanie Mattek-Sands will take it.
The American advanced to the second round at the Moorilla Hobart International in Hobart, Australia, by virtue of an injury-retirement 6-2, 2-0 win over No.2 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Monday. Pavlyuchenkova had to quit in the second set because of a right hip flexor muscle strain. The win puts Mattek-Sands into the second round against Japan's Ayumi Morita.
On the complete opposite end of the bracket, France's Marion Bartoli, the No. 1 seed, flexed her muscles by pounding former No. 1 Dinara Safina, 6-0, 6-1. Bartoli destroyed Safina on her serves, returning more than 0 percent of Safina's first serves for points, and 78 percent (14 of 18) of her second serves. She also broke Safina six times in 15 opportunities, while Safina broke Bartoli just once.
Ranked No. 2 at the end of 2009, her fifth straight season in the Top 20, the 24-year-old Safina reached the fourth round of the 2010 Australian Open, then missed three months of the season. When she returned at Stuttgart, she was still ranked No. 3 in the world, but that quickly changed as she went 9-15 the rest of the year, never winning more than two matches in a row to drop out to No. 63 currently.
The other notable American in Hobart was Melanie Oudin, a first-round loser against the Czech Republic's Klara Zakopalova, 6-3, 7-6(3).
