Let’s take a look at some of the names who have really stood out thus far down under.
Roger Federer
Roger Federer has always been a dominant server. But, he has not always been among the best in terms of avoiding being broken on his serve.
That has changed for the 31-year-old in Melbourne.
Through four rounds, his opponents have failed to break his serve even one time. That’s a testament to how masterful FedEx has been on the courts this year.
Maria Sharapova
Last year, Sharapova lost an Aussie Open finals matchup against Open winner Victoria Azarenka. This year she will take on newcomer Li Na of China for a chance to potentially get her rematch. Na hasn’t cruised to the semis like Sharapova has.
Mike Dickson of The Daily Mail said that no one has ever reached the final four of the women’s singles as easily as Sharapova has done it. She has lost just nine games throughout the entire tournament, to this point.
She’s doing it in record, time, too. Sharapova has spent just 315 minutes on the court after five matches. That’s a significantly less number than the 788 minutes it took male star Novak Djokovic, according to Dickson.
