A first-round matchup pitted 40-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm, who recently had a 12-year absence from professional tennis, against No. 14 in the world Agnieszka Radwanska. In the third and final set, Radwanska was narrowly winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-5, and the two were at deuce.
Date-Krumm served the ball to Radwanska, who hit the ball back. As she did, most of the racket flew out of her hand, leaving her with a chunk of the handle. She had been hitting her racquet in anger during the third set, and as a result that likely contributed to the racquet breaking.
The 12th-seeded pro grabbed another racquet and won the match three points later, so it ended up not being a big deal. Still, that could have ended badly, with Date-Krumm getting the upset after the racquet broke.
Tennis legend Martina Navratilova, who was broadcasting the match, said that she had never seen that happen before. With the bizarre way the racquet broke, I don't see that happening again.
