ATP Preview For Tokyo, Japan

With the Asian Tour kicking off last week in Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, this week's ATP World Tour event in Tokyo, Japan will continue to take the world's best players toward a possible appearance at the World Tour finale in London.
While Rafael Nadal recorded his worst performance of the season against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in Bangkok, Andy Roddick, Juan Martin del Potro, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will look to end their respective seasons on a strong note.
The solid field in Tokyo will also feature Ernests Gulbis, Gael Monfils, and Jurgen Melzer, who will all be in the mix for the first place prize of $261, 500 and 500 ATP World Tour points.
With a Tour cutoff of No. 68 in Tokyo, expect many enticing matches from the early rounds.
Let's now take a look at the top and bottom halves of the draw.
Top Half
Nadal will remain the favorite in this half of the draw, but one has to keep a watchful eye on the potentially fatigued Spaniard. Nadal won his first two rounds in easy fashion in Bangkok, but fell to pieces against Garcia-Lopez in the semifinals.
Converting on a remarkably poor 2-of-26 break points during his defeat, Nadal will need to be sharp during his early matches in Tokyo. Locking horns with Santiago Giraldo in the first-round, Nadal could face either Richard Gasquet, Thiemo de Bakker, or Gulbis in the quarterfinals.
Gasquet and Gulbis seem to be struggling with their confidence in recent months, while de Bakker remains on the cusp of a break out performance. Touted as the next young entrant into the world's top 10, de Bakker will have a tough time getting past Gasquet and potentially Gulbis, but if he reaches a final eight position against Nadal, then a competitive performance could be brought forth.
