Andy Roddick Roars in Paris at the BNP Paribas Masters

(November 10, 2010) Andy Roddick overcame a case of jet-lag with a rapid takeoff in Paris. Continuing his quest to secure a spot in the ATP World Tour Finals, Roddick ripped nine aces, surrendered only four points on his second serve and did not face a break point in a 6-1, 6-4 blowout of Finnish qualifier Jarkko Nieminen. The victory vaults Roddick into a round of 16 match with Latvian Ernests Gulbis at the BNP Paribas Masters.
Defending champion Novak Djokovic dismissed Juan Monaco, 6-4, 6-3. Serving at 4-2 in the second set, Djokovic erased a break point with an ace out wide. He will play either Frenchman Michael Llodra or American John Isner for a place in the quarterfinals.
Third-seeded Andy Murray overcame a one-set deficit and a pain in his right wrist to subdue 2007 champion David Nalbandian, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
A 2003 and 2005 Paris Indoors semifinalist, Roddick raised his record to 12-6 in Paris in his second win over Nieminen in the City of Light. Roddick fought back from a two sets to one deficit to defeat Nieminen in five sets in the French Open first round in May.
"Every match I win is significant at this point it puts pressure on the guys behind me," Roddick said. "The last thing you want is to be at home cheering against somebody hoping that something bad happens to them."
The eighth-ranked Roddick is 2-0 vs. Gulbis, including rallying from a one-set, one-break deficit to post a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 7-5 win at the 2008 US Open.
Roddick, who has reached the Paris final four in two of his last four appearances, missed the tournament last year and said he's satisfied with the speed of the surface, which rewards his resounding serve.
