However, once in a while, or when hard-work permits, great achievements can occur in the world of tennis to an elder statesman.
Winning his first Masters 1000 title in four years on Sunday, American Andy Roddick capped off a superb month in March which included winning the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, and reaching the finals of the BNP Paribas Open in California.
Highlighting his improved backhand and serving variety, Roddick defeated Rafael Nadal in the semifinals in Florida, before slicing away a red hot Tomas Berdych in the finals. His last two matches in Miami were particularly impressive considering the vast differential required to defeat each opponent. Against Nadal in the final four, Roddick was down a set and in danger of being ousted in straight sets. Changing gears in miraculous fashion, Roddick reeled off four of the hardest forehands I've ever seen him hit to break Nadal and serve for the set.
Admitting in his post-match presser that he "took some serious chances against Nadal when he needed to," Roddick captured his third career victory over the Spaniard in eight career meetings.
In attendance for the semifinal clash, I have to admit that I didn't think Roddick would defeat Nadal. Watching the American closely for the better part of eight years, I had seen a transgression in his ability to hit his groundstrokes as hard as the other members of the top 10. If anything, Roddick was the strangest sort of counter-puncher in the business; a player who possessed the hardest serve in the game, but had relied on fitness and consistency to win on Tour.
