Andy Murray's victory at the Rogers Cup came laced with the added achievement that he can now be considered the world's No. 2 tennis player, taking over from Roger Federer after beating Novak Djokovic in the Montreal final.

Sky Sports tweeted the movers and shakers inside the top 10:

Murray guaranteed the No. 2 spot with his semi-final win over Kei Nishikori, then solidified it with his victory over Djokovic, who remains the world No. 1. The mark matches Murray’s highest-ever ranking as a professional player, which he previously scaled in August 2009, per Mark Hodgkinson of the Daily Telegraph.

"It's good to get back close to the top," said Murray, reported BBC Sport.

"It's nice to get back especially after everything I went through last year with the hip surgery and dropping out of the top 10," Murray continued. "A lot of questions were being asked about how my game was physically. I'll keep working hard and try to get that one spot higher."

Djokovic looks almost unreachable at the summit of the standings, though, as the Serb has won two of the three grand slam titles this season, only losing to Stanislas Wawrinka in the final of the French Open before succumbing to Murray on Sunday.

The additional ranking boost will serve as a great momentum builder for Murray as he looks to secure his second U.S. Open title. The Flushing Meadows showpiece, where the Scot won his first grand slam title in 2012, begins later this month.

Ultimately, it’s the prospect of illustrious silverware that will motivate Murray, not ranking points. But two years on from his last grand slam win, perhaps this jump is the impetus the Scot needs going into the U.S. Open and will give him the confidence, as the world’s second-best player, to assert himself at this prestigious tournament.
