But while a plethora of female contenders have been wiped out, including Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova, a pair of past women's champions are still alive and looking to add to their legacies at tennis' most prestigious tournament.
Here we'll rank the top women still standing at SW19 as we gear up for the round of 16.
No. 1. Serena Williams
Defending Wimbledon champion Serena Williams is without question the woman to beat this summer at the All England Club.
The overall top seed is the overwhelming favorite to repeat with 1-4 odds according to bet365.com. And it's hard to make a case against her. She's won 33 straight matches dating back to March and has won three of the past four Grand Slams.
In addition, she is a five-time Wimbledon champion and has won three of the past four titles at the All England Club.

No. 2. Petra Kvitova
A past champion at the All England Club, Petra Kvitova is much more dangerous than her No. 8 seed would lead you to believe.
The 2011 winner is through to the round of 16 and is flying under the radar on the bottom half of the draw as sports journalist Simon Cambers points out, which means she won't have to play Serena Williams until the final next weekend if both players can continue to win.
