2010 French Open: A Complete Preview of the Entire Men’s Draw

As is the case before every major tennis tournament, there is a lot of excitement. There is a lot of excitement because there are 128 players, and 128 potential winners. There is no lead, there is only a vast sea of opportunities. Anything is possible, but in the end there are some players that are more likely than others to advance.

 

Likely Winners:

Roger Federer: His draw may not be easy, but then again no draw ever is. He will start against Australian Peter Luczak, a seven-year veteran who has made it to the third round of a major twice, but never made it out of the first round in three tries at Roland Garros. He is ranked 71st.

Assuming he beats Luczak he will get either Janko Tipseravic, who once took Federer to five sets in a major. He could also face Alejandro Falla, who has never gotten past the second round of a major tournament.

In the third round he will most likely face 27th-ranked Feliciano Lopez. After that he might face the Frenchman Gael Monfils in the round of 16. Any one of his first four matches could pose a threat to the reigning French Open Champion, but he will most likely cruise.

Rafael Nadal: Nadal is the king of the French Open, and has won 31 of his last 32 at this tournament with his one loss coming to now No. 5 seed Robin Soderling.

Nadal will face, and probably beat, French teenager Gianni Mina. His first test might not come until the third round with veteran Lleyton Hewitt, but in reality, that should be an easy match for the aging Australian.

Ivan Ljubicic could create a problem for Nadal in a later round, but he will most likely not face a test until the quarterfinals when he will probably face Fernando Verdasco, with whom he played a five-set classic in Australia last year.
