Bill and Public Act
The Bill, released in May 2004, calls for an inventory and investigation
of international education programs and goals; guidelines on excellence
in international education for wide adoption; and supportive politicies
for school-to-school and other international exchange opportunities.
Florida | Legislation
This bill would require the Board of Education to revamp Florida's state education standards. Included would be increased foreign language requirements.
Kentucky

the 2002 General Assembly, the state legislature passed a resolution
(SCR 142) urging the Department of Education to promote international
study and other activities that promote cultural awareness, mutual

Legislation recently passed in the Massachusetts House and Senate
to establish an international education advisory committee.
Michigan
| Governor's
executive order
In 2002, then-Governor John Engler signed Executive Order 2002-4,
which created the Michigan Commission on Asia in the Schools within
the Department of History, Arts and Libraries. The Commission released
a report
on November 14, 2002, which called for increased focus on Asian studies
to better prepare Michigan students.

Legislation in both the House and Senate to increase world language academic standards.
New Jersey

Assembly Resolution
The New Jersey General Assembly passed a resolution in March 2005
"encouraging students, teachers, administrators, and educational
policy makers to promote and participate in international education
activities that enhance civic education, advance cultural/cross-cultural
awareness, lead to communicative competence in world languages, further
literacy/multi-literacy, and poromote mutual understanding and respect

New Mexico

Bill to appropriate $50,000 for a multistate collaborative to advance

North
Carolina | House Bill
2007 Bill to appropriate funds to establish a project to expose school superintendents to educational practices in other countries that could be successfully replicated in North Carolina schools. The project would attempt to build connections between school systems in NC and school systems in other countries.

A $200,000
appropriation to the Center for International Understanding
for the purposes of continuing the statewide collaborative international
education effort, North Carolina in the World, passed the 2005 session
of the North Carolina General Assemble. This funding was embedded
in the overall state appropriations bill signed by the Governor. "North
Carolina in the World Project. Makes a grant to the Center for International
Understanding for the project "North Carolina in the World: A
Plan to Increase Student Knowledge and Skills about the World".
FY 05-06: $200,000."
Ohio | Proposed Legislation
Ohio Core legislation approves new high school graduation standards including two credits of a foreign language.
Utah | Proposed Legislation
This legislation would establish a critical languages program and pilot in Utah.
Washington | Proposed Legislation
This bill would establish a full-time staff position at the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction to serve as world languages supervisor. It enumerates 10 duties to be fulfilled by the position. It proposes funding pilot projects at the elementary and middle school levels, including a dual language enrichment program in a major Asian language.

The state
legislature made a one-time allocation of $500,000 for geography education
in 2002.
Wyoming |
The Wyoming Legislature passed a law in 1999 requiring that every child in grades K-2 have the opportunity to learn another language. The Legislature reinforced that mandate by appropriating $5 million in 2004 to fund the development of a K-6 language program to be piloted in fifty Wyoming elementary schools for five years.

In November 2006, a conference sponsored by the University of Indianapolis entitled "Indiana's Future: World-Class Schools for the 21st Century - Leadership, Learning and the Global Economy," attracted over 500 attendees.
Kansas Summit on Strategic Languages| website
In December 2006, the Kansas Summit on Strategic Languages, drew over 100 teachers, business people, media, administrators and policymakers from Kansas, Missouri, and California.

Hosted by the Kentucky Department of Education, the summit brought
together education, business, government and private agencies to identify
international partnerships and activities for students and teachers
and to discuss ways to provide a world-centered education approach.
Massachusetts
Initiative for International studies | website
The Massachusetts Initiative for International Studies shares the
mission of the National Coalition on International Education in the
Schools. That is, "to expand our nation's investments in international
studies by stimulating teaching and learning about world history,
languages, cultures and current affairs" in schools throught Massachusetts
and elsewhere in New England. Its goal is to build connections among
schools, higher education institutions, policy and business leaders,
the media, community organizations, and parents to ensure that American
students have the knowledge and skills they need for the interconnected
world of the twenty-first century. A December 5, 2003 meeting focused
on achieving these goals.
Internationalizing Michigan Education | website
On March 6, 2007, Michigan State University hosted a conference, Preparing Our Students for a Place in the World: Internationalizing Michigan Education, co-sponsored by the Education Alliance of Michigan and Michigan Department of Education.
International Education Connects New Jersey to the World | website
The first New Jersey International Education Summit was held on October 27, 2004 at Princeton University. The goal of the summit was to provide information to develop a five-year state plan that will ultimately improve the capacity of New Jersey’s schools to provide quality international education programs.
New Mexico Summit on International Education |
The New Mexico Department of Education held an International Education Summit in late November of 2004. The summit assessed existing international activities, significant opportunities or challenges facing New Mexico, and potential international partnerships.
North Carolina in the World Leadership Summit | Agenda
Held in April 2005, this conference featured the release of a public report by the four leadership teams to the legislature and business community.

Oklahoma Governor's International Education Conference| website
The theme of the conference was Oklahoma's International Strategic Goal: To ensure a workforce prepared for global competition.
Pennsylvania International Education Forum | website
The Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Pennsylvania International Education Advisory Council held the first Pennsylvania International Education Forum on December 13, 2006. The goal was to begin a dialogue among educators and businesses to explore the best way to prepare Pennsylvania students to become global leaders.
Vermont Summit on International Education | Overview
On December 5, 2006, more than 70 policy makers participated in the Vermont Summit on International Education sponsored by UVM Asian Studies Outreach Program (ASOP). The purpose of the Summit was to promote policy changes in Vermont to encourage, support, and protect teachers and other educators when they teach about geography, history, languages, cultures, and arts of other world regions and integrate those subject matters with the existing curriculum offerings.

The Virginia Department of Education hosted their first International Education Summit in May 2006.

Teaching and Learning in a Global Community |

A pre-Kindergarden through graduate school conference on international
education that attracted over 300 participants from the fields of
education, business and government. The website includes agenda, description
of a concurrent resource fair (organized by the local World Affairs
Council) as well as downloadable fliers and background information.
Summit participants were recruited largely through an e-mail campaign.

the Cyrus R. Vance Award for International Education in West Virginia.
The purposes of this award are to honor the life and career of Cyrus
