It took just seven minutes for the Springboks to register their opening try—flanker Willem Alberts powering over after the visitors turned down the opportunity to kick an early penalty and went for touch instead.
The resulting line-out was the staging point for a rolling maul, which South Africa executed immaculately to offer Alberts the chance to score.
A mistake from Scottish fly-half Ruaridh Jackson was then capitalised on by Springboks full-back Willie Le Roux, who intercepted his pass to break in midfield and could not be caught.
If that was an impressive try, then the next was close to sensational and it came soon afterwards.
This time Le Roux was the creator, scything through before sending a wonderful kick toward winger JP Pietersen, who collected and went over for a try to mark his 50th cap.
Scotland were trailing 21-0 and, with halftime still to arrive, staring at a potentially humiliating defeat.
The home side at least managed to stem the tide somewhat in the second half. They limited South Africa to just one score, with replacement Coenraad Oosthuizen going after another successful piece of work from the Springbok forwards after a line-out.
The match finished 28-0 and with Scotland's only consolation that they didn't let the visitors run wild on the scoreboard.
"We played a quality side and we gave them three clear opportunities in the first half and they took every one of them," said Scotland coach Scott Johnson, as per BBC Sport.
"You don't always get that in the game and they were pretty clinical."
Scotland's next test is against Australia on Saturday. South Africa, meanwhile, will take on France in Paris.
