Rugby Championship: Can Quade Cooper Turn Wallabies Saviour?

The Wallabies may have been thumped in the final Test, but the first two were settled by a matter of points, and had the maverick Cooper been pulling the strings for Australia then the result of that final Test may well have been an irrelevance.
Cooper’s high-profile omission from the Lions series has been well documented, chewed over in pubs and clubs up and down Australia. Everyone knows the narrative: maverick fly-half falls out with conservative coach, posts offensive tweet, gets dropped from the squad, Wallabies lose series.
Not everyone has faith in Cooper; there are those who believe he is too unreliable for Test rugby, that his defense is way too porous (it certainly needs a lot of work) and that he is not deserving of the jersey after a series of off- and on-field transgressions.
But the one person that really matters, new Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie, is in the other camp and last week recalled the free spirit to his squad for the upcoming Rugby Championship.
McKenzie knows Cooper from their days together at the Queensland Reds. He knows his fly-half well, has invested time in developing a bond and has managed over recent seasons to get the best out of him.
Cooper arguably played his best rugby to date when guiding the Reds to the 2011 Super 15 title, and while they’ve not been able to repeat that success, they have at least reached the qualifying finals of the two seasons since then.
