The home side went ahead after five minutes through a penalty from Tommaso Allan—after Argentina were penalised at the scrum (all game information taken from Planet Rugby's live commentary).
Allan added another three points midway through the half to make it 6-0, but Argentina responded almost immediately with the game's opening try.
Winger Juan Imhoff was the scorer, delivering a blistering finish in the corner after the Pumas spread the wall wide. A conversion from Sanchez gave Argentina a 7-6 lead, but Argentina conceded the lead again soon after when they gave Allan another penalty shot.
Sanchez responded with three for Argentina on 35 minutes and the teams went into the break with just a point between them—Italy trailing 10-9.
Fifteen second-half minutes passed without that changing, before Martin Castrogiovanni conceded a penalty that extended the Pumas' lead to 13-9.
Then came a try which could have swung the game in Italy's favour. Allan's clever kick was fumbled by Imhoff, inviting centre Michele Campagnaro to pounce and touch down for the home side.
The conversion was missed, however, and Sanchez soon reasserted Argentina's lead with a penalty to make it 16-14.
As the clock ticked down, Sanchez sealed victory with a drop-goal in the 74th minute.
The win was Argentina's first of their European tour. The Pumas were soundly beaten by Wales last week, having already fallen to England at Twickenham.
Italy beat Fiji last time out but lost to Australia the week before.
