The Springboks followed wins against Scotland and Wales with a hard-fought victory that went all the way to the wire, before replacement Pat Lambie's late penalty put the tourists out of site.
South Africa opened the scoring with a try from JP Pietersen, who blocked a kick from Morgan Parra to touch down and get the visitors off to the perfect start. Morgan Steyn put over the conversation, and the Springboks were 7-0 up inside three minutes.
Parra missed a penalty for France soon after—falling victim to the difficult conditions under foot—and it was not until the 27th minute that Steyn ticked the scoreboard over to make it 10-0.
Steyn added another late in the half, but France responded from the kick-off with a try to lift the home crowd. Yoann Huget was the scorer who had excellent support play from Parra and Sofiane Guitoune.
Parra converted, which took the teams into the break at 13-7 to South Africa.
That's how things stayed until the 58th minute, when the boot of Steyn made it 16-7.
Jean-Marc Doussain replied for France to bring them within six, but Lambie's late penalty ruled out the possibility of a dramatic winning try for the home side.
Both sides picked up yellow cards during the match—Thomas Domingo of France and Francois Louw of South Africa.
The loss for France was their second of the autumn after losing to the New Zealand All Blacks. France beat Tongo last time out.
