Wayne Bridge Quits England After John Terry Affair

The decision comes after the player was placed in the media spotlight after allegations that his England and former Chelsea teammate John Terry had an affair with his former girlfriend.
Terry was subsequently stripped of the England captaincy by Fabio Capello and Bridge has now announced, through a statement from his lawyers, that he is unavailable for selection as he considers his place in the squad is “untenable and potentially divisive.”
Bridge’s full statement reads as follows:
“I have through long and hard about my position in the England football team in the light of the reporting and events over the last few weeks. It has always been an honour to play for England. However, after careful though I believe my position in the squad in now untenable and potentially divisive.”
“Sadly therefore I feel for the sake of the team and in order to avoid what will be inevitable distractions, I have decided not to put myself forward for selection. I have today informed the management of this decision. I wish the team all the very best in South Africa.”
The timing could not be worse for Fabio Capello after first-choice left-back Ashley Cole was ruled out for up to three months with a broken ankle.
Bridge was Capello’s preferred replacement for Cole and the Italian is now expected to call upon Stephen Warnock of Aston Villa and Everton’s Leighton Baines for the friendly against Egypt next week.
Bridge has been capped 36 times in total for his country, making his debut under Sven Goran Eriksson in 2002 against Holland.
He scored one goal against Iceland and was part of the England squads at the 2002 and 2006 ...
