With the tournament in Brazil now just 71 days away, time is running out for players to prove that they deserve to be in the squad of 23 that travels to South America in June.
As it is not an official international date, both sides have called up almost exclusively North American-based players, and thus the chance will be given to some fringe players to show their skills.
And U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said before the game, as reported on USsoccer.com:
Everyone knows the clock is ticking. This is a huge opportunity for our players to show where they are at and to make their case. We expect them to give a really strong performance against a Mexican team that is now basically coming back on track. They need to prove now that they badly want to go to Brazil.

The one player who will be involved on Wednesday who does not play in either the MLS or the Liga MX, 18-year-old Julian Green currently plies his trade at Bayern Munich.
