Transfer News: Tim Cahill Has Joined Chinese Side Shanghai Shenhua

The 35-year-old announced the move in an exclusive interview with the broadcasters on Tuesday, less than 12 hours after New York Red Bulls announced he had left the club by mutual agreement.

— FOX SPORTS News (@FOXSportsNews) February 3, 2015 Cahill appeared to deny any notion that he has chosen the Chinese Super League side for financial reasons, citing his desire to raise the profile of Asian football instead.
“I asked for a vision, and vision isn't just about money,” Cahill told Fox Sports.
“I want to be an ambassador for Asia and Australia. I'll make an impact in China on the pitch, I promise you. When I go somewhere, I'll do it properly."
The former Millwall youth also confirmed he spoke to David Moyes, whom he worked under for eight years at Everton, about a possible move to Real Sociedad, as well as multiple Premier League clubs.
Cahill stopped short of confirming which English sides he had spoken with, but the fresh challenge of moving to China proved too much for him to resist regardless:
I've made the decision purely because I've played in the Premier League and did really well and it was a massive compliment to get the phone calls I did last night and to speak to Moyes about possibly going to La Liga. I've done the Premier League, I've done America. New York was amazing for me (but) China is a growing market in football.
The midfielder scored 16 goals in 72 appearances for New York Red Bulls, per Transfermarkt, winning the MLS Supporters' Shield with the club in 2013, having joined from Everton in 2012.
