Liverpool: Two Surprise Players Picked for England Squad for Euro 2012

Two players from Liverpool were clear shoo-ins for the squad—defender Glen Johnson and midfielder and Liverpool skipper (and now England captain) Steven Gerrard—although, I expected Manchester City's Micah Richards to be included in the squad.
However, two names on the squad list surprised me. Stewart Downing and Andy Carroll had made it to the Euros. (Jordan Henderson is on the standby list.)
How could Stewart Downing have made it on the England Euro squad? How could Hodgson be so trusting in the English winger who has not made a goal or an assist for Liverpool during the recently finished season? Is England lacking in the wingers department? I don't think they are at all. Does Hodgson see something in Downing that the fans can't?
Downing's made 33 appearances for England and has never scored. See a pattern here?
For the sake of England, we will hopefully see Downing on the bench for most of the tournament.
I am happy to have found out that Andy Carroll is included in the England squad. The 23-year-old forward has improved in all departments (except when he threw Swansea's Ashley Williams to the ground in frustration) and looked generally fired up and lively when on the pitch.
Hopefully, the big target will line up at the front with Wayne Rooney to pose an aerial threat as well as strong arm defenders to set up chances for the Manchester United forward.
Hodgson's inclusion of Carroll will do wonders for the Geordie's confidence, something that he's lacked this season. It also will help Stewart Downing gain composure and confidence as well and affect his consistency in a positive way.
If the two start off on the right foot, hopefully it lasts going into next season to help guide the Reds to start ...
