Lauren Holiday Retires from USWNT at Age 27: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction

According to Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated, Holiday indicated she wanted to spend more time with her family after spending the past decade with the U.S. national team. Wahl added that Holiday will still play for FC Kansas City of the National Women's Soccer League.
Holiday scored the third goal in the 14th minute of the USA's 5-2 triumph over Japan in the World Cup final this past Sunday, capping off her representation of her homeland in epic style.
American soccer legend Mia Hamm reached out to Holiday:
Holiday has had an extended legacy in international play, having been a part of two gold-medal-winning U.S. teams at the Summer Olympics in 2008 and 2012. She registered 130 caps and 24 goals with the senior team.
Tuesday's news is the first domino to fall in the wake of the USA's amazing run to the World Cup in Canada. Holiday may be around for the 10 victory tour games the U.S. will play, but she doesn't seem to be caught up in the moment and the possibility of a third gold medal at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The rest of Team USA's nucleus should be relatively intact for the Olympics and another World Cup run. Abby Wambach figures to walk away from the game soon at age 35, but much of the current core will be tempted to stick around with the Olympics on the horizon again.
