Italy vs. Serbia Abandoned After Crowd Violence; Flares Used as Missiles

The kickoff in Genoa was delayed for 35 minutes after Serbian fans reportedly threw flares and fire crackers towards the Italian supporters and onto the pitch.
When the action finally got underway, referee Craig Thomson was forced to abandon proceedings when a flare came close to hitting Italian goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano.
"The game will not be played. I've never seen anything like it," said Italy coach Cesare Prandelli afterwards.
Serbia and Inter Milan midfielder Dejan Stankovic joined his teammates in attempting to calm the visiting fans before kick-off, but to no avail.
"We tried to calm our fans, we didn't applaud them," said captain Stankovic.
Italian 'keeper Viviano said the referee had no option but to call the game.
"It was impossible to have played in that goal. I would have had to constantly turn around to make sure that no flare hit me."
Around 1600 Serbia fans were kept behind for police surveillance after the game and to allow the Italy fans to leave without further trouble.
